How to perfectly complicate & pull off a surprise party in 3 easy steps.

As many of you may recall, I long dreamt (and begged for) a P-diddy style White Party for my 29th Birthday (because there will be no celebratory 3-0′s for this mama- if people want to live). Well this weekend my dream came true x 100.

Together, Mr.Complicated & my mother (who gets a kick by calling herself “Complicated Mama’s-mama”) devised a plan. A complicated one, but one that worked out seamlessly.

Step 1: Combine parties for 2 suckers who were desperately/secretly/not so secretly wishing for a party…

In my case, my Godmother turned 50 and had hoped for a celebration last week. So she was my party- counterpart.

Step 2: Make them work for their own party

My mother informed me that “WE” had to throw my aunt a surprise party at my house, and because I made such a fuss about my white party, she was telling my Aunt that this was going to be my 29th birthday.

There for WE came up with a menu, a list, decorations etc. I was up cooking vodka sauce and meatball parm until 1am the night before… and decorated til the minute I walked out of the door. The over the hill decor was black and white..so this worked out perfectly for the little schemers.

On my Aunt’s end, she was breading chicken cutlets, making last minute store runs and planning to being the bait to get me out of my own house.

Step 3: Make each of them be their own bait.

My job was to ask my Aunt to babysit (because this was her party). So she thought this was me trying to get her to my house for the party (that was really mine).

Her job was to tell me that I had to pick her up last minute cause she didnt have a car (this was her trying to get me out of my own house for MY party)

I knew this call was coming but I had to just play along to make her BELIEVE it was MY party… but it was really HER party.

… the result?

(My friends were to the right in the WHITE room .. in this pic I am thinking.. What the?
O no! .. no no… this isn’t about me its suppose to be a 50th! I feel so bad!)

(And then we looked left— Her friends were there in the BLACK room … but also all in white! and then I thought- “Ok, they got us!”)

There is something really special about a genuine surprise. Not like a babyshower, where you know its coming just arent sure which day.. I’m talking no clue. Surprise.

It was complicated, yet genius and I cannot express enough to everyone involved how much I appreciated it! My cousin made the guests Hangover kits as favors… that were truly all you’d ever need for a hang over…. My one friend Vicki came all the way from Queens, and got stuck at the bus stop, in the rain for 20 min. cause as usual- I was running late getting out of the house.

All of our friends, Im sure went out of their way to make it there for us that day… and all I have to say is we are blessed.
