Pre-game the holidays with a good read & GIVEAWAY!!

CONGRATS @MrsLoulou!! She’s won both of these FABULOUS books!! :)

We read to our son every night. He cannot even sleep without his “Night Book”  and often pushes to “read just one more book”.  I can only hope that his love for books stays with him as he gets older.

Recently I was asked to review 2 Holiday books, “The Christmas Magic” and “The Nutcracker and The Christmas Mouse”… and although it was only October I said…ahh what they hey!.. a little pre-gaming for Christmas never hurt a kid… and well- its November now- Christmas is in the air, so I thought its the perfect time to share >>hey! That rhymed.  (haha)

Both_BookCovers_Together

The Christmas Magic By Lauren Thompson

Of the 2 books, this one was my 4yo son’s favorite.  The book tells the story of how Santa and his team prepare for Christmas day. From rounding his reindeer, to checking his list and snipping his “whiskers” (my son cracked up that the book called them whiskers) Santa prepares for the night when the Christmas Magic arrives.  This books is ideal for any preschooler or young school aged child.  The story is the perfect size  and its beautifully illustrated pictures make it even more engaging. The Complicated Boy’s favorite page depicted Santa in Bunny Slippers.  We went back to that page quite a few times. Children love a book with great pictures, so that they can re-read it to their parents in their own words…  I love that.

Here’s a video peek at this book:

The Nutcracker and The Christmas Mouse By Gail DeMarckren

This book tells the classic story by ETA Hoffman, and like the Christmas Magic  also has pages of beautifully illustrated pages. It took us a little longer to get through this book since my son kept stopping me to ask tons of questions about the detailed pictures.  He loved them. This book is a classic, and I think it can become one of those holiday reading traditions,  enjoyed in a variety of ways through out a child’s life.  For preschoolers like mine, its fun to read snippets and talk about the pictures page by page and as your child gets a little older- they can then discover and enjoy the full classic story.

Both of these books are offered through Scholastic & but today-

They You can WIN BOTH, just in time for the Holiday! :) How exciting is that??

One of our traditions is to watch “The Christmas Story” starting on Christmas eve as we get all the gifts ready. And then we always have it on in the background on Christmas Day. We love that movie.

Hello Complicated Mama! The books look lovely, thanks for the give away.

Fav tradition: My hubby, daughter and I just moved from lovely San Diego and used to go to the beach for the holidays. Spoiled? Yes, except now we live nowhere near the ocean. :) We’ll probably go hiking in a beautiful nature preserve if it’s at all sunny, and maybe even if it’s not! We love to make fresh pasta and apple pies, and this year, I might even try to start making tamales.

My favourite tradition (that my Hubby and I have continued) is to have a fondue dinner on Christmas eve. It’s fun do to and it forces everyone to spend time together around the dinner table. We recently switched up the recipe by using broth instead of oil to do the cooking.

    I will retweet this too!

Since I was little my favorite tradition has always been making Springeli cookies. These are a traditional German cookie. My great grandparents came over from Germany and we use my great grandmothers hand carved springerli rolling pin. These cookies are always my Dad’s project which made it cool too.
I am one of 3 girls and my mom had someone carve each of us our own Springerli rolling pin so we could each have one to make the cookies with our kids too.

We put up the tree the day after Thanksgiving every year and my daughter gets to pick out one new ornament every year to buy (something special like a hobby or what she’s into at that age) so that when she’s grown up (sniff sniff!) she will have ornaments for her very own tree!

My fav Christmas tradition actually happens on Thanksgiving night. For as long as I can remember, my family always gathered around the couch to watch the seminal Christmas classic “A Christmas Story” (yes the movie with Ralphie and you’ll shoot your eye out). My family is a little bit left of center and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I plan to carry the tradition down to my kids as well.

I love watching the movie, “A White Christmas” with my mom, dad and sisters. Now with my new little family, Eddy joins me in this tradition. As long as there are plenty of cookies he is good and Baby Boy loves the music.

Favorite Christmas Tradition?? We started the “Elf on the Shelf” at our house. A day or two after Thanksgiving we read the story and then magically “Gingerbread” appears at our house the next morning. He is great at getting my 3yo to behave and gets her so excited for Christmas. This year we are starting a new tradition with an Advent Calendar.

I look forward getting together with family over the holidays. The women gather in the kitchen and we talk and laugh and catch up on gossip. Sometimes we share a recipe or 2. I love to take pics of everyone opening gifts. This yr I would love to start a tradition and draw names out of hats for secret santa. Thanks!

Christmas Eve we always have fondue, it is a very yummy and fun tradition.

We buy each of our children an ornament each year usually having to do with something they’re doing that year or something they’re interested in. They each have their own “Christmas box” where their own ornament and other items they get (nutcrackers, snow globes, etc.) are kept. We all decorate our tree each year and they get to put their own ornaments on “their” section of the tree, and set their other items out. It’s always fun to reminisce about when they got their ornaments. Thanks.
