Happy Birthday to Mr.Complicated and Mother Earth

Ok, ok … so while I have no proof that today is actually the day the Earth was born, it is a day to celebrate all things green and earth friendly. I do however have in my possesion a little wrinkly, slightly discolored piece of paper that says today is- my sweet, handsome husband, Mr.Complicated’s  Big 3-0! Which means I get to crack old jokes all day long to mask my ever grown fear of being “next” to hit the milestone.

"30 is the new 20... no biggie"

The one thing Mr. Complicated has on his side (besides his good looks and admirable ability to remain sweet and sane while living with my complicated self)?…. He will always be 10 years younger than Earth Day ;)

When it comes to Earth Day, I have to admit. I’m not as green as I probably should be- though I do recycle! …Hey its a start!

I have also been dabbling in efforts to eat and feed my family organically over the past month. What can I say? It’s the Oprah effect.

About a month ago Oprah had a show that talked about the movie Food Inc and organic living… and though I have not mustered up the courage to watch Food Inc, the information they share on the episode was enough to make me think twice every time I purchase something in the supermarket.

So why haven’t I watched Food Inc. you ask? Well it comes down to this- even though I have not watched it or even seen a trailer- my gut tells me that I can be certain when I do watch it, I will be grossed out at the raising and keeping of the animals enough that I will never be able to eat every day products again. Which is good- except, (price tags aside) organic food is just not as common day as it should be.  In fact, sometimes when I go to my local Shoprite I can’t find organic meat at all! …. and truth be told I am lazy. (Did I just really come clean about that on Earth day?) So tell me have any of you ever watched Food Inc?… or made the leap from lazy to organic ?

In other green news, I am also learning a lot about Eco-friendly toys through my work with The Big Toy Book and as many of you know, the Complicated Kids were in an Eco Friendly segment on WABC this week. The toys they were playing with for the segment were really great ones- I wish we could have taken them all home- especially the shopping cart for Princess Complicated. Too Cute.

In case you missed it or were unable to see the segment, here it is-

The Eco-friendly toys I’ve been introduced to recently are some of the best quality toys I’ve seen as a parent. Seriously. It makes me wish it were easy enough to just revamp the play room of only eco-friendly toys.  Have you ever held a product made of sprig wood? or organic Cotton? The colors, the feel- there is just something relaxing about them.  Are you Eco-consious with your kids toys?

If so, you can win some eco-friendly toys tomorrow . I’ve also compiled a list of some green toy manufacturers on Twitter-

Feel free to let me know if I’ve missed any of your favorites!

Happy Earth Day!…. and pass by Mr.Complicated’s blog to wish him a Happy B-day if you have a chance :)

Just watch it! It is becoming easier and easier to buy organic. Even Costco has organic options. I don't go totally organic, but if it's meat or dairy I would much rather it be organic. We are lucky because of where we live, it's not that hard to find organic products.

    Happy Birthday to Mr. Complicated!

We saw Food, Inc. a while back and even though we have been eating organically (90% of the time) for about 4 years now, it was a good refresher. Watch it. It wasn't as bad as I had expected. Stony Field Farm is highlighted in the doc, and I already loved them, but now I love them even more! There are so many organic choices these days, its great! The only thing I find a problem is finding everything all at one place! I currently shop at 3 different stores. Urgh.

I just stumbled upon your blog tonight, this Earth Day 2010. I am so impressed with your toy list, it includes some brands that even I had never heard of before. I love the concept of green toys, like Sprig, GreenToys, and PlanToys, but I have mixed feelings about some of the others on your list.
For example, I looked at some of the plant and insect toys, and all I saw was little plastic containers that grow things, and some books. I encourage parents to think beyond the toy itself. After all, when a child finishes growing their seeds/bugs/creatures, they are still left with an empty plastic container. An empty plastic container, that still ends up in a landfill.
I love GreenToys, because they are made, in California, out of Recycled milk jugs. The toys have no metal parts, no paint, and are packaged in a recycled/recyclable cardboard box. There are no annoying twist ties holding it in the box either. And when your child outgrows their GreenToy, it can be donated, or passed on to the next child. (Check out the recycling truck, My 3 y/o is in love with it!)
Sprig Toys also have some awesome paint-free, metal-free, fastener-free toys, like Dragonfly's Heli-Scoopter, that come with seeds in the recycled/recyclable package. Wildflowers in the sandbox!
Also, in terms of the Nature-themed toys, call me crazy- but when I want to teach the kids about Nature, we go outside. Whether it is a provincial park, or a playground in the middle of a concrete jungle, we can always find something alive to explore. If we must buy things to teach kids about nature, consider some of the great books that are available, or seeds and soil. Try reusing household items to create an ecosystem in the backyard or on the patio, out of things around the house, like empty pickle jars, is also totally fun.
    Happy Earth Day!

Happy Bday to the Mr! Tell him not to buy you a vacuum for your 30th. Mr. I'm Gonna Kill Him narrowly escaped death over that poor decision.

Going green can be as painless as you want – that's what people forget. If you feel your quality of life is compromised by giving up x, then figure out y. You don't have to do everything; do what you can. If everyone did that, it'd be a much happier Earth. I saw an Oprah episode once where she brought on a food expert and asked this question: If you could only afford to buy 1 kind of food that is organic, what should it be? And the woman said, without a doubt, DAIRY.
