Why Mother’s Day ‘Trumps’ Father’s Day

Call me Bias, but I whole heartedly believe Mother’s Day trumps Fathers Day. The reason why? And really, there is only one… but it is a biggie.

You ladies know what I’m talking about….

GIFT SHOPPING.

Men have this same complaint about Mother’s Day but I just don’t think its as valid. You see, we all know that sometimes God doesn’t bless the men we love with the unique, personal gift-giving gene… Well not when unique, and personal means something we’d jump up and down about anyway.

I once got this for mother’s day:

He said to me: “What? You saw it on TV and said ‘Oooh! I need that!’ “

He was right. I did. and it was thoughtful.

But boy have I never said that again near holidays!

Anyway, I digress.

Even if it is SO hard to find that perfect gift because of that lacking gene, Mother’s Day Shopping is a cake walk with the plethora of things that would perfect for ANY Mom-

Mani/Pedi, Gift Card for a shopping spree, Spa Day, Those silly coupons that give us a day completely kid free… we eat this stuff up, because its all things we don’t usually get or have time to do for ourselves.

Men? NONE of this stuff is applicable to, not most of them anyway- and as women we’re blessed not only with the gene to pick out unique/personal gifts- but the inborn need… and when it comes to Father’s Day— we end up hitting a wall every time.

I don’t categorize fathers as “Tech Dads”, “Sports Dads”, “Do It Yourself Dads”, etc.because in my experience, there are only 3 kinds of Dad’s when it comes to Father’s Day and they are all impossible to shop for.

The Dad Who Has Everything- This would be Mr.Complicated. A total Tech-Geek-Dad….. and an early adapter at that. The only time a tech-gift was even an option was his 30th Birthday this year when by what can only be explained as a HOLY MIRACLE- The IPAD was being released the week of his Birthday. However, was it a “surprise”? Not really. I had to give him the playful “Im not getting you that” line with a *wink* wink* at the end every time otherwise I know he would have ran out and pre-ordered one himself.

Tech dad’s aren’t the only ones this “has everything” profile fits though- it also applies to the sports fanatics, handymen, etc etc. Some guys just have to have the things they love, as soon as they are available… leaving us Moms who have to buy for them frustrated as all hell!!

The Dad Who Wants Nothing- “So What do you want for Father’s Day?” …. “Nothing” …. A common response people give when a.) their list is so long they can’t narrow it down to just one or b.) feel bad telling you what they want is probably going to take you to the bank. ONLY THIS DAD?... He means it.  He truly wants NOTHING… because he has next to no interest in anything in particular. No specific sports teams, music interest, restaurants, NADA!  This was my Stepfather George. The Man ended up with Socks, T-shirts and the same cologne he’d been wearing since 1974 for every holiday. Seriously.

Pino Silvestri

I can smell it now…

Smells like Father’s Day…

and Christmas… and his Birthday.

The Dad Who Doesn’t Like Anything- This Dad has interest, style and a particular ‘taste’ in thing- however… its SO particular, you don’t stand a chance at ever getting it right. There have been times you were sure you nailed this guys’s present with that great Calvin Klein shirt you picked out– til, you come across it new with tags in the back of his closet. ((argghh!! why don’t they just return it?!?))

So surely you can understand why, as I sit here and scramble for some last minute gifts I have already come up with the perfect Mother’s Day gift for next year …. A Get Out Of Fathers Day Shopping Pass.

These dude’s get off way too easy.
