Our Friends Rocked the NYC Help A Mother Out Cocktail Party/Diaper Drive! #HAMO

Help A Mother Out As I mentioned in my previous post, last night Carol of NY City Mama and I hosted a diaper drive/cocktail party at the beautiful Affinia 50 hotel in New York City. The event was organized through the Help A Mother Out (or HAMO) program and benefited the New York chapter of of Baby Basics, a non-profit organization that helps low-income working families in need.

The idea of donating diapers in particular came about in 2009 when co-founders Lisa Truong and Rachel Fudge had learned that diapers (which are not covered under social safety net programs such as WIC and Food Stamps) were the number one need for Moms and families who struggle daily to make ends meet. It was from this need that Help A Mother Out was born.

Thanks to HAMO, this year these diaper drives are being held and helping various local charities, not only in New York but all across the country.

Our diaper drive was held in The Affinia 50′s club room, which was both spacious and elegant. The Affinia Hotel believes it is important for each guest to “create their own experience”- and this experience at their hotel was no exception.

Our HAMO cocktail party guests, who were among what I consider to be some of NYC’s creme de la creme of Bloggers, were treated by the Affinia to a beautiful and delicious spread of hors d’oeuvres complete with dessert and wine station.

Photographer Alethea Fitzpatrick donated her time and her talent to help document the night’s festivities. Each guest in attendance brought a package of diapers – some even brought 2 or 3 boxes! We collected these diapers all in an adorable crib that the accommodating staff at The Affinia had set up for us.

By the nights end, our diaper crib was overflowing.

In addition to the diaper collection, we were also very fortunate to raise additional money for Baby  Basic’s diaper needs through sponsored raffles- 8 in total! Our raffle tickets were sold 5 for $15 and guests were able to drop their tickets into any cup they’d like for their chance to win fabulous donated prizes.

Some of our prizes for the night included:

- 2 night stay at the Affinia Hotel (Perfect weekend get away!)

- Affinia BYOB Wine experience gift pack

- $50 Spa Finder Gift Certificates (Who doesn’t love a great spa day?)

- Toy Prize Packs, courtesy of The Big Toy Book

- $200 family photography gift certificate, by our event photog Alethea Fitzpatrick (whom you can see by these pictures has an amazing talent)

- Gift Certificate for a free personalized cake topper from You Cake (who also provided the beautiful cake for our event with the HAMO logo!)

- A diaper cake tower donated by 1-800-baskets

And just as we we were about to announce our raffle winners, one of our guest and fellow bloggers, Adam Cohen of Dada Rocks jumped in and announced he wanted to add his “SEO” web services to the raffle table which helped us sell even more tickets at the last minute!

Upon our final count, we proudly announced that we had successfully donated well over 400 diapers and additionally $400 towards diaper purchasing for Baby Basics through our raffles.

Brenda of Baby Basics graciously accepted the night’s donation on behalf of the organization and was so truly thankful for everyone’s generosity. It was beyond moving to hear her speak about the women and families that we were helping that night and was followed up by Carol’s account of her own past experience as a struggling single mother.

After we announced our raffle winners and donation totals everyone joined us by the fireplace to celebrate with our beautiful, personalized HAMO cake that was donated by our new favorite cake decorator You Cake.

Giving Back is the New Black

Amongst the every day chaos, the crazy wars, natural disasters and over all depressing-ness that is saturating the news 4 times a day; it seems lately, the Good-deed-do-ers of our society are starting to pop up more and more.

Maybe it is because over all people are just TIRED of hearing the bad stuff, I know I am.
So today I wanted to share the 2 that I thought were the coolest things I’ve heard about… and challenge you all to “Do good, Feel Good”.
“The Lunchnote Promise” (by Oscar Mayer Lunchables)
Remember as a kid your mom would tuck a little note in your lunch box for a fun mid-day surprise, saying “Love you”… “Have a great day, Honey!” … “I’m so proud of you!”….

What do you mean you don’t? .. .. ..

ok, ok, well neither do I ….

However I did have a friend whos mom would often cut out her daughter’s althetic crushes from the local sports section and tape them to her sandwhich with a caption of “I LOVE YOU CHRISTINA” lol … and those have made for stories we are still retelling til this day… Did I mention we were in Highschool?

Point is:
Even if your mom wasn’t June Cleaver, and your dad wasn’t Danny Tanner… admit it- sometimes, you’ve kinda secretly wished they were the head of the PTO and slip you little notes of “Go get em’ Tiger!” -types.

Ok, so maybe not in Highschool, but I’ll tell you what- Christina’s mother’s unconventional notes have made her Legen- (wait for it)- dary!

The REAL point is- Lunch notes, whether sentimental or out right embarassing can make life long memories, and no matter which type of note it is- the over all message is “I Love you”…. and more over, don’t you want to be the star of a “highly acclaimed” blog such as this one in about 15 years? (tee-hee)

Well, Oscar Mayer has come up with a way to bring back the Lunch Note. For every person who takes the lunchnote pledge, Oscar Mayer will donate $5 to Feed America! They also have on their site, a program where you can print out your very own stationary to leave your kids their very own notes taunting them about their h.s. crushes telling them how much you love them.

It’s the simplest do-good deed you can do… so go sign the pledge, taunt your kids and feel good about it! (it takes literally about 5 seconds, but can make memories that last a life time.)

In other Good Deed news, Disney is going to be launching a program in January called

People will be able to go to www.DisneyParks.com to browse the list of volunteer opps through the “Hands On Network” in their area. After their volunteering is done- the volunteers (you) get a free- no-strings attached ticket to The most magical place on earth… Disney! Does it get any better than that?

“It’s a great way to honor guests who are making a positive contribution to their communities,” Disney President and Chief Executive Robert A. Iger said in a statement.
And it is true! …. but Mama didn’t raise no fool.
Disney is luring you into their parks that have been hit by the recession knowing fully that once you get your little tikes in there- its all about “Mommy can I have (fill this in with various over priced snacks and souviner items)
… so, while I think its a great opportunity that will both help you with your next family vacation, and make you leave you all warm and fuzzy from giving back to society– I am also warning you…. make sure you do not enter that park singing “No Tango Dinero”, because as magical as it is- money trees is not yet added to its hat of tricks.

But its for a good cause, I know I plan on doing it… and really who can put a price tag on that warm fuzziness?
