In the late 80’s/early 90’s, you would be hard pressed to find a girl who did not want to be DJ Tanner from Full House.
Candice Cameron was the epitome of tween cool-ness. And when I was 10/11-ish I was told all the time that I looked like her.

Hey, look! My house is full too!
No doubt this had much to do with our chubby faces, but that only made it all the more flattering to me. She was someone I could identify with as I entered the “awkward” stage and began to feel a little self conscious about my appearance. She wasn’t perfect and yet she was someone everyone wanted to be …and people thought I looked like her!
So, while I tried to play it cool when the “compliments” came, my mother can attest to the fact that at home I was working hard to keep up my DJ-appearance.
DJ got a perm- I got a perm (eh hem… pictured above).
DJ wore patten leather lace up shoes with diaper pants- I wore patten leather lace up shoes with diaper pants.
DJ wore loud floral patterns, I wore loud floral patterns.
Talk about influence!
Then one day Candice Cameron began to grow and lost her chubby face, and so did I .
Doppleganger no more.
Still, Candice Cameron has a special place in my childhood memories because she helped me embrace the infamous “awkward stage”.
My friend Jessica of The Mom Creative just launched a new series which allows us #TBT-ers to dig a little deeper and share the stories behind those old photos. I absolutely love this idea! And will be participating more in the coming weeks.
Unfortunately, right now many of my pictures are boxed up from the move so this picture of my DJ-Tanner-Wanna Be phase was the best I could come up with. However, I promises I have some goodies to share for future posts!
Join in the fun by linking up your stories at The Mom Creative.
