Decor. We’re obsessed, even if it drives us to near insanity! Am I right?
I mean have you ever gone down the Houzz-rabbit hole? OMG. I collect rooms on that site like its my j-o-b!
But as much as I love dreaming about designing the whole room from scratch (and trust that I do this on a daily basis– drives my husband cray), I know it’s not always practical or necessary.
So what is a Houzz/Pinterest-obsessed gal to do?
Truth be told, focusing on changing just one or two things is usually enough to freshen a room up. The other nice thing about small changes is that it’s usually super easy to un-do things if you don’t like your new changes.
Below, I’ve put together a little list of some crazy easy things to help you take baby steps to achieving some of that home styling you are craving.
Baby Steps To Achieve Your Home Decor Dreams
Paint By Mood
After my own past decor fiascos, I’ve learned it’s best to get the color scheme agreed first.
Pick colors that complement the furniture in your room. That way, you don’t have to change the furniture if you don’t want to. Use an accent or feature wall that you can paint in a bold or vibrant color.
A new color can offer a new mood for the room, but if you are feeling non-comittal (as I did when we first moved in), a great neutral color will never disappoint because you can always change the color scheme with accents!
Flooring Pick-Me-Up
Hardwood, tiles and carpets, oh, my! Though, not always the easiest change to make, there is no denying that your floors can instantly give a room a facelift.
A great area rug with bright colors or an interesting geometric design can really add to a room without having to rip up any current flooring.

We used this moroccan shag rug in our family room to break up all the brown between the floors and the couch– it made a world of a difference and we get compliments on it all. the. time.
Freshen Up The Furniture
If you’re tired of your couch, new throw pillows and couch covers can really freshen it up, on the cheap. I recommend stalking Home Goods, Target and Etsy to find some of this stuff at great prices.
Adding a new accent furniture, can also put a new spin on a room. Maybe a new chair or tables?

Those high gloss furniture designs look great in a minimalist design;
and in the house that I live in, in my head– sans kiddos planting yogurt covered fingers all over them, I tooooootally have a ton of that stuff.
But for life-with-kids-practicality? I love unique furniture with character, texture and durability. Something fun, but not heartbreaking if it gets a little wear and tear.

If you aren’t looking to purchase something new– check out some Annie Sloan chalk paints and give a new color to something you already own. The benefit of chalk paints is that it is very forgiving and easy to use without much prep work needed.
Change Or Add Highlights & Accents
Curtains are so beautiful when they’re lush and ornate and give a new feel to a room.
If your furniture has a pattern, go for a bold solid curtain. If your furniture does not have a pattern, check out some funky patterns and florals!
I personally am OBSESSED with adding white into rooms– and double curtain-rods, allow just enough color/pattern to live in perfect harmony with natural light and bright, whites. It’s a win-win in my book.
Collage walls and shelves, scream personality! Whether you are trying to create rustic decor or something more minimalistic, the items on display can help define your style instantly.
And I guess a cute (totally trained) puppy never hurt, either. Ha!
