This week, I was given the opportunity by one of my favorite bloggersto attend the “Motherhood” Premier in NYC.
If you (like me) have never heard of the movie Motherhood, it is movie that documents the day of an urban NYC mommy blogger, Eliza (played by Uma Therman)whose hectic days make her feel like she somehow lost herself & passion for life, when she left her full time job as a writer and took on the title of MOM and is struggling with the question of posed by a contest “what does motherhood means to you?”
When I read about the movie synopsis, I knew I had to see this film – not only because it sounded fun but because I was pretty certain they had torn pages from my life and I was ready to sue sue sue! … … (I kid, i kid)
Living so close to NY, I’ve attended lots of movie events that were referred to as premiers but in reality they were advance screenings- which is cool too, but this time.. it was the real deal.
I’m talking red carpet, star studded complete with snooty media guy who snarkily snorted “You’re a ‘Blogger‘….. invited …. by another ‘Blogger’ ? “, when I went to check in.
… umm, isn’t this movie about… Me & my fellow “Bloggers”? Seriously, he wouldn’t even look at my id to check for my name, but long story short, just as the movie was about to start Snarky Niche Media guy waved a pass at me and exhaustedly said “Just go, just go”.
Back to the movie-
Though I am not sure how the movie will be accepted by viewers outside of the Tri-state area, who cannot relate to things like alternate side parking, crazy city driving and constant street closures for filming days, Eliza talks about many other things we can all relate to- such as how our tasks as mothers some times seem simple : Make the bed, Vacuum, Fold the laundry – but the day to day structure can eat away at the passion you once had for life. She, like many of us gets frustrated with her husband (played by Anthony Edwards), who she feels is never around when she needs him to be (though he is), and at one point she realizes that all of the things that once made her love him suddenly she no longer had time to appreciate because she was so overwhelmed.
On the blogging front however, parts were far fetched. There is a ‘tad’ bit more work that goes into blogging than what was shown, like the challenges of being looked down upon by snooty folks like their check in guy, And while the situation sounds awesome- I don’t think even the biggest of bloggers could walk into their local bakery and name drop their blog with people being familiar with their site… ok with the exception of Perez Hilton.
That being said I get that it was a sub-plot line, and I do believe the main messaging hit home: Motherhood is Complicated!
The movie has started up a twitter account, I am not sure who is on the other end of it- but they are awesome (you should follow them).
The other day they asked “What is the difference between writers and bloggers?” I’ve since read a lot of different takes on the question, and my response is that there is no difference.
A blog is just a different writing style, blogging speaks from the writer to the reader -raw and unedited- and depending on your reading style you may choose to get your info & daily reading via your favorite blogs or via The Times.
It’s true, anyone can blog. However it’s just as easy to say anyone can write. It’s the success and engaging an audience that is the tricky part of either.
