Oh. Em. Gee. This polar vortex that many of us are experiencing right now is insane.
Images like THIS? Seem to be straight out of The Day After Tomorrow.
Except it’s not. Its lake Michigan- in real life. Like, today.
With these crazy winter temps, many (like me) are staying home and cranking up the heat to keep warm. Without a doubt, this can impact your energy bill, something I am CONSTANTLY thinking about with the vaulted ceilings in this new house– which is one of the reasons we installed NEST.
Have you heard about Nest? It is my husband’s BFF. Seriously he’s obsessed.

Nest Learning Thermostat, MSRP $199
Nest helps reduce energy bills by remembering the temperatures you like, the times you like them and programing itself to adjust automatically. When you’re away, it turns the temp in the house down, right before you come home from work it starts heating the house up. And if you aren’t keeping to a regular schedule, it can be adjusted remotely via the Nest app on a smartphone or tablet. You can also see how much energy you’ve used and saved via the app- which is my husbands favorite game to play.
It’s pretty cool.
But what can you do today… right now, while you’re inside trying to stay warm?
Here are 5 energy saving tips from NRG Residential Solutions that can help conserve energy not just in this crazy cold spell but every day:
- Rotate your fans clockwise, which pushes the warm air back down.
- Use an electric blanket to stay extra toasty instead of a space heater.
- Wash your clothes in all cold water.
- When using the dryer, run multiple loads at a time. The heat will build up and not need as much electricity. Also, use the cool-down cycle to allow clothes to finish drying with the remaining heat in the dryer.
- Replace your bulbs with energy-efficient lighting
Hope that helps!
Stay warm, my friends!
