There is no doubt that as parents, sending our children to school is suddenly a bit terrifying since last Friday’s tragedy at Newtown Elementary- but what are our next steps?
A change in the second amendment? (… Personally? Yes.)
Police officers assigned to each school?
How about bullet proof school bags?
From the spike in sales of Amendment II bullet proof backpacks, LaRue Tactical and Bullet Blocker ballistic backpack inserts, there seems to be many who think this may be a practical idea.
The advertisements for these crazy new School Gear items make me want to vomit–
The Amendment II backpacks are offered in 3 different styles, one being … Disney Princess and retail for … wait for it… $300.
And while it makes me sick, what makes me more ill is that when I first heard about it, a small part of my mind could understand why sales have spiked for these products.
What kind of world are we living in that there is a market for sending kids to school with a SHIELD? That after being glued to the news for a week, I as a parent could see the reasoning behind the product and think it may not be completely insane?
It is though.
The product, the ads, the marketing. The idea of ever having to explain to (and no doubt, traumatize) your Disney-loving children why they need it? It’s all crazy.
But if the government can’t control guns (and mental health care), and the cities can’t fund designated officers at every school is there even the smallest possibility that *this* could be our future? If so, homeschooling may be in my future.
{turning off the news now}
Can you ever see yourself considering purchasing one of these for your kids?
